explored the fragile processes of extraction of the Minnesota mining industry in the Iron Range and the dredging cycle in the Duluth-Superior Port, the second largest dry bulk port in the US. As Duluth's economy is heavily reliant upon both of these processes, we sought ways of making this extraction regenerative by using the excess dredge material to increase the port’s resilience. Among other things, we focused on the sources of siltation, the costs and processes associated with dredging, and current beneficial use applications of dredge material. We evaluated current propositions by local agencies to use dredged material on-site by constructing wetlands near the industrial shore and expanded upon their plans to connect habitat and provide recreational areas across the port. The wetlands would utilize mechanically deposited material at the mouths of creeks to capture pollution and suspended solids before they enter the port’s shipping channel. Islands could be mechanically constructed in the open water in the center of the port. Across all of the areas identified for deposits, we designed infrastructure and identified vegetation to stabilize the mechanically created islands while creating habitat and providing support for a trail and marina. Wiers, piers, and rip rap could be used throughout the port to create a variety of different edge conditions appropriate to specific areas. These structures would allow for designed, stable conditions where needed but would otherwise permit natural processes to create dynamic landforms from the dredge deposits. My project TraMurano is an acknowledgment of the delicate yet strong tradition of glass-making, community, and complexity throughout Murano. This concept seeks to highlight the connectedness of these productive islands and industries. Like a spider web, this design utilizes a multitude of strands and nodes to created an interconnected and robust network. Nodes along this network provide spaces of rest, observation, and contemplation. The Italian term tramere means "to weave" while tramite refers to linkages. The Markermeer, a 70,000 hectare lake near Lelystad has become a turbid, cloudy, nearly lifeless body of water because its clay bottom is constantly being churned by waves with nowhere for the accompanying silt to drain. This silt is described as a thick layer of yogurt that strangles the aquatic vegetation and stifles fish and microorganisms. My design for Marker Wadden, On the Horizon, is one that promotes the water of the Markermeer while utilizing techniques to generate new ecologies and spaces for people and wildlife.
